Wishing Well

Cinderella's Wishing Well is a little hidden detail in itself, set off the beaten path. It provides a quiet spot to escape from the craziness of a busy day at the Magic Kingdom and make a small wish. The Wishing Well is beautifully decorated from top to bottom, but it is the bottom that deserves the most attention.

The basin is surrounded by the bluebirds, carrying a ribbon that stretches around the entire circumference. The birds are sculpted in lively poses that are unique to each individual.

Around the base, we find Jaq, Gus, and the other mice trying their hardest to steal a strand of pearls from under Lucifer's watchful eye. It's a wonderful sculpture, that begs the viewer to walk all the way around to get the full story.

Rustic Ranchos

The Ranchos section of Coronado Springs is a surprisingly detail-rich area of the resort. While the Cabanas and Casitas are more or less boxy hotel buildings with little fountains and gardens in between, the Ranchos transport you to an entirely new environment. Here, cactus and rocky dry riverbeds instantly engulf you in an arid, desert landscape - something you would not necessarily expect to see in tropical Florida. Hitching posts and animal tracks in the concrete add to the look.

A true "who's who" photo display of four-legged celebrities can be found hanging on the walls, including one special bovine, Minnie Moo, who resided at the Magic Kingdom and Fort Wilderness until she passed away in 2001.

On May 14th, my friend Ryan over at Main Street Gazette posted an article about the details found in the bathrooms at Camp Minnie-Mickey. I'll admit that I too share a fondness for bathroom decorations that employ the same story-telling techniques found elsewhere on property. It's a touchy subject, bathroom details, so I've held off sharing anything up to this point, until now.

These gorgeous tiles can be found in the bathrooms at Pirates of the Caribbean. They are full of so much amazing detail that it's hard to believe they were relegated to such a place. Large colorful fish surround a vessel that bears Viking influences, and if you look closely, you may even spot a lone passenger onboard.

The Adventurer's Club holds a museum-sized amount of quirky artifacts from around the globe; souvenirs that the Club members have picked up during their travels. One such items is the Flying Carpet of Abu Dhabi, displayed on the wall on the entrance level to the Club. Complete with seatbelts, it has certainly been well-used for many magical flights.

The inscription belows reads:
Authentic Flying Carpet of Abu Dhabi Acquired by Lord and Lady Reed and donated to the Club's permanent collection following an unfortunate camel collision. Fortunately, Lord and Lady Reed walked away from the incident unscathed. 'It pays to buckle up.'

A fortuitous circumstance brought the following detail to "light," if you will pardon the pun. A well-timed e-stop on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (Wedway Peoplemover) turned the lights on in the tunnel leading into Space Mountain, and illuminated the ceiling. This revealed numerous neon-colored stars which are usually very hard to spot during normal operations. They are a perfect accompaniment to the Star Tunnel music which softly plays in the same area.

When you think of a merchandise shop, you rarely think art gallery at the same time. But China's store features trinkets for sale as well as beautiful pieces that are there simply to view. The latter includes the fish basin, located at the doors on the far end of the shop (nearest the outdoor market area). The basin is lovely just to look at, but a framed sign on the wall reveals historic information and invites the guest to actually interact with the piece.

In honor of Melody Time's 60th Anniversary, celebrated today, it seemed appropriate to share some details found in Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe. Namely, the tin pot worn as a hat by Johnny Appleseed, one of Melody Time's starring characters.

In addition to Johnny's tribute, a similar display can be found for the Lone Ranger's mask and silver bullet, frontiersman Kit Carson's map and navigational tools, and Davy Crockett's bag and powder horn.

With tonight's midnight premiere of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it seemed only fitting to share some images of the well-designed FastPass machines at Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular. The machines are made up of gas tanks, trunks, crates, and other various items fitting of an archaeological dig. The pieces are well detailed, even down to the stenciled address of "Prof. Jones, Marshall College."

Local citrus growers donated their personal juice labels to decorate the walls of Disney's Vero Beach Resort. Of particular interest are the Donald Duck orange and grapefruit juice labels on display. This brand was created by Citrus World in 1940 through a licensing agreement with the Walt Disney Company. The wonderful vintage designs (one label carries a copyright from 1942) are a perfect addition to the resort, combing local culture and Disney magic.

Down the Stretch They Come

The pool area at the Grandstands section of Saratoga Springs is perhaps one of Disney's most clever designs. That is, if you are a fan of horse racing.

The details begin as soon as you approach the pool area, where the gate features a white metal design of horses running on a race track.

The kids play area is designed to look like the Saratoga starting gate, complete with "horses" breaking from the gate that spray water.

Large planters take on the shape of horseshoes...

...while the pool itself is wonderfully shaped like a race track, complete with furlong markers and finish line.

The bar, laundry, and bathroom area is designed to take on the appearance of the backstretch, the area where the horses are stabled. From the name of the bar itself, to the elegant horse designs in the corners of the hallway, even the "stalls" of the bathrooms are made to look like, well, horse stalls.

As anyone who has been to Saratoga would notice, the predominant use of red and white is a tribute to the colors found at the actual track. As a final touch, posters displaying past races at "The Spa" can be found inside the laundry room. As you can see, the Imagineers went to great "lengths" to ensure the authenticity of this particular area.

Vero Beach sits in Indian River County, so named for the lagoon that runs through it. The area is world famous for its citrus which makes up a large share of the industry. Disney's Vero Beach Resort embraces the history of the surrounding area, and locally-inspired details can be found in almost every corner of the property. Even the tables in the lobby are created to look like citrus packing crates, printed with the Indian River name. As many of the local citrus growers donated material for Disney to use, the Orchid label is most likely the Orchid Island Growers Inc. company, which is located in Wabasso.

The name "Smilodon" is not just a fun play on words to accompany the smiling cat. It is actually the genus name for the large-toothed creatures who lived in prehistoric North and South America. Interestingly enough, the Smilodon is California's state fossil.

Goofing Around

Fulton’s General Store over at Port Orleans Riverside is arguably one of the best resort gift shops around. The decor helps to strengthen this claim, including the scene that takes place in the middle of the store.

Huey, Dewey, and Louie are seen wearing straw hats and matching shirts, pulling on a rope with an unseen outcome (though it is probably not a good one!).

Chip and Dale are up to their usual mischief - antagonizing poor Donald once again. This time they have dropped a crate onto his head, which gives him a look that is famous in the cartoon world.

Goofy exercises what not to do on a ladder, and seems to be having some problems with the stove pipe.

Even Morty and Ferdie Fieldmouse make a rare appearance, helping to fan the fire.

Lighting the Way

As I previously explored in my tour of benches, the individual countries that make up World Showcase have all been given extremely careful attention when it comes to theming. This time, I am going to take a similarly obscure trip around the World and explore the various light poles.

The generic World Showcase style takes on elements from each country and combines them to create a truly unique form.

Canada's design features rustic elements from the Pacific Northwest, including natural wood, wrought iron, and a lantern.

The United Kingdom light pole has a design like what you would expect to find outside your local pub.

France's light features a graceful, elegant design on top and conical-shaped glass.

Morocco's dual light fixture has colored glass and ornate design work in every component.

Japan's lantern is styled like a delicate wooden temple.

The American Adventure has colonial style lighting, with a gas lamp appearance.

The beautiful stained glass lighting of Italy seems to take its influence from the Gothic and Renaissance architecture of Venice

Germany's lighting features subtle elegance in its yellow glass and detailed ironwork, which carries down into hooks for the hanging plants.

The African Outpost takes a unique approach, where its lighting become more sculptural and organic with colorful patterns.

Like the Japanese style, the Chinese lighting seems to take an architectural form in brilliant red and gold.

Norway's lighting has a very rustic look to it, something that you would expect to find in a seaside town, with an added embellishment of a metal crown finial.

Mexico's lighting features dark, ornate metalwork and textured glass, giving it a rich look.

When you first walk into the Great Ceremonial Hall, you may begin to feel inundated by sensory overload. There are things to see everywhere, and they are all expertly themed to make you feel like you walked into a tropical oasis. The ceiling is no exception, as it carries a pattern influenced by Polynesian culture. Yet look even more carefully, and you will find that it was designed so cleverly that you probably won't see the vents, speakers, and other items, which adds wonderfully to the resort's handcrafted appearance.

Road Trip

Taking the family on a cross-country vacation is a long-standing tradition of American culture, even immortalized in the 1938 short Mickey's Trailer, and it is celebrated at the Pop Century Resort. During the busier hours, this Airstream-shaped kiosk located by the bus stop opens up to become a free-standing merchandise cart selling the various items that guests might need during their time at the parks. However, the cart is far more interesting detail-wise when it is closed up.

The two large sides feature maps of Florida and California, with the respective parks clearly marked, of course.
Even the Walt Disney World logo is presented in its original form, adding to the vintage postcard look.Looking even closer, the cruise ship has a not-so-subtle reference on its smokestack.

The opposite side features such classic California icons as orange groves, a sunbathing woman, and a movie studio in addition to Sleeping Beauty Castle.

The sides of the trailer feature the trips that Mickey has taken across the country, and points out the various places of interest, which includes everything from the urban (such as New York City and Salt Lake City) to the rural (like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon).

Icons from across the country are portrayed in a whimsical style that evokes the postcards from the 1940's and 50's. In one scene, Mickey is shown riding the trailer as it is pulled by a pair of oxen on its way to Louisiana. In another, the Three Little Pigs make a cameo in Kansas to help point Mickey in the right direction.

The Joke's On Me

But each area takes on a unique approach to that overarching theme and explores different groups of animals enjoying or, unfortunately, being lunch.

Typhoon Lagoon's Crush 'n Gusher water coaster is built around the ruins of a fruit processing plant. The company's name is TropicalAmity, which contains a subtle play on words. The Imagineers even made it easy to pick up on the joke by slyly breaking the sign at a critical point.

The small posters on the bottom left feature a great retro-inspired design and supply the origin of the attraction's name through their motto: "Our juices are CRUSHED for flavor, Our produce is GUSHING with taste."

The Firehouse is an often-overlooked location on Main Street USA. While it serves as a shopping destination for firefighter and pet-related gifts, it also features some wonderful turn-of-the-century details in the back of the building.

Even the penny press machine is themed wonderfully to the area.

With the creation of the Year of a Million Dreams (now pluralized in its second year), the creatives at Disney came up with a new language: Where-speak. It has popped up in the commercials, merchandise, tickets - practically any opportunity that presents itself. It provides a fun, unique way to tie different entities together - and takes a refreshing look at existing venues. Examples includes Mickey standing in front of a paparazzi-style crowd that reads "Where everyone screams at the sight of a mouse" or Tinkerbell flying above Cinderella Castle with a burst of fireworks with a caption of "Where the night is as bright as the day."

This fun theming extends in the full-service restaurants as well, where individual locations are given their own personal message on their menus.

The next time you enjoy a Dole Whip, make sure you take a closer look at the rock work that surrounds the area. The theming from the nearby Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse spills into this area, and that includes the benches across from the Aloha Isle.

At first glance, it is apparent that the makeshift benches have been fashioned together using flotsam from the Robinson's ship. You can easily see hints of crates, windows, and masts set amongst the stone walls.

Yet an even closer look will reveal intriguing carvings in the rocks, almost prehistoric in nature. The images are simple and the subject matter includes animals such as fish and turtles, people, objects such as boats and the sun, and geometric shapes. The origin of these images is never revealed, creating to a fascinating mystery. Perhaps they were created by the native people that lived on the Robinson's island, or they might stand alone as their own - disconnected from any ties to a pre-existing story.

Today marked the official name change from Disney/MGM Studios to the new Disney's Hollywood Studios. I must admit it is a tad bittersweet, but it gives the rare opportunity to watch an entire park wide transformation. While the signage switch will last into the next couple of months, Disney cast members were hard at work last night to make some important changes, both big and small.

Of course, the main entrance signage was given the new treatment and unveiled for the first time this morning.

Some of the changes were a bit more subtle, such as this switch on the security guardhouse by the ABC Commissary.

Farewell, Disney/MGM Studios, and welcome, Disney's Hollywood Studios!

Nothing says Christmas like a monorail, and for a Disney detail-phile like myself, Christmas Eve means it is time once again for Monorail-a-palooza. Last year my friend Trish and I decided it would be amusing to try to ride all 12 monorails in a single day, and successfully completed the task in 3 hours. This year, my friends Melissa and Travis joined me in the second annual event, and were able to ride all 12 in a record-breaking 2 1/2 hours.
